The internationally acclaimed Ice Box Challenge is taking place in Ireland for the first time this summer, with the big
reveal in September, offering a powerful demonstration of the benefits of energy efficient building design.

Hosted at Trinity College Dublin as part of the lead-up to ZEB Summit 2026, the initiative is being delivered in collaboration
with the Passive House Association of Ireland and MosArt.

Selfbuild Extend & Renovate Live exhibitors have partnered up to create the Ice Box Challenge, including iDomus, NorDan and Ecological Building Systems.

Two identical-looking demonstration structures, each containing a large block of ice, are placed outdoors. One is built to conventional construction standards, while the other meets the rigorous Passive House standard, featuring superior insulation and airtightness.

Exposed to the same weather conditions, the challenge will reveal how building performance affects energy retention by
comparing how much ice remains over time.

Live sensors will provide real-time temperature and performance data via the ZEB Summit website, with the final
reveal scheduled during ZEB Summit 2026 September 23rd.

You can come meet the experts at the Selfbuild Extend & Renovate show; the next show is in Connacht on October 3rd and 4th.
