While it’s often one of the last things physically completed, your outdoor space should be considered early in the design process when you’re extending or remodelling.
Changes to your home’s footprint, layout or orientation will inevitably affect how you access and experience your garden.
Ask yourself how you currently use the space and how you’d like to. A rear extension, for example, might eat into your garden, so it’s worth reassessing how much lawn, patio, parking or planting space you’ll have left. On the other hand, a clever redesign can create a stronger indoor-outdoor connection and improve how both spaces flow together.
Think about:
- Privacy from neighbours.
- Sunlight access at different times of day.
- Where doors and windows will lead.
- Outdoor dining or seating areas.
- Parking and paths.
- Future needs such as play areas, low-maintenance planting, or accessible routes.
