  • Boost in grants for insulation measures
  • New insulation grant for first time buyers: free upgrades
  • When the new grant amounts kick in
  • What if you’ve already applied for a grant?

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has announced major grant increases for those carrying out an energy upgrade on their home.

Boost to grants for Heat pumps

Heat pump grants have almost doubled in value via the new combined fixed-rate approach, up to €12,500, compared with the old standalone heat pump grant of €6,500 for detached houses.

The new €12,500 grant includes the existing €6,500 for the heat pump plus €2,000 for upgrading radiators/pipework and €4,000 for what the SEAI calls a ‘renewable heating bonus’.

The good news for anyone who is currently in the process of applying for a grant is that the SEAI will apply this new maximum grant to existing applications that have not yet been processed for payment.

The new heat pump grant comes into force on the 3rd of February 2026.

Windows and doors

New grants for windows and doors are a major addition: these were not separately funded under the old Better Energy Homes individual grants as they were only available if you availed of a One Stop Shop grant.

When the entire house is retrofitted, windows will receive a standalone grant support of €4,000 for a detached house and €800 for each external door.

To avail of the grant, the house will need to achieve a minimum performance standard, i.e. needs to be reasonably insulated in the first place.

This grant will be available from the 2nd of March 2026.

Boost for insulation grants to tackle inflation

Attic insulation support is also significantly higher across all home types, making this basic retrofit measure more financially attractive and reducing net homeowner costs.

The new grant amounts for insulation will come into effect on the 3rd of February 2026.

Exact grant amounts for detached homes, for cavity wall insulation, internal wall insulation and external wall insulation, haven’t been communicated yet but are expected to be higher than the current amounts. What we know so far:

Pre 2026Grant amounts from 3rd Feb 2026
Attic Insulation – Detached€1,500 €2,000
Attic Insulation – Semi-Detached€1,300 €1,500
Attic Insulation – Mid-Terrace€1,200 €1,400
Attic Insulation – Apartment€800 €1,100

The SEAI also announced it would introduce a grant to ensure first time buyers get to upgrade their attic insulation quickly and at the lowest possible cost.

The SEAI said that “in many cases the grant amount will cover most or even all the total cost”.

The SEAI also announced a ‘Second Wall’ measure which will take effect on the 2nd of March 2026. At the moment homeowners who already availed of a wall insulation grant do not qualify to upgrade their walls again; the change to the grant system will allow those homeowners to apply again in order to further better their U-value and make their home ‘heat pump ready’.

Other grants

Core grants in ROI for other energy upgrades, such as heating controls, PV and solar water heating, remain unchanged.

The new SEAI grant amounts were announced on the back of the ROI government’s National Retrofit Plan 2026 published on January 27, 2026.
