  • What he’d change in his Co Kerry home

The cottage has this wonderful mix of old and new, with the front of the house maintaining the look of the old cottage that once stood here, including the tiny windows. Then at the south-facing rear, large picture windows to take in the views and capture solar gains. The windows have worked out perfectly and we’ve had no issues with them.

What I would change: The only thing I would consider changing is the opening of the kitchen window. I’d probably prefer a single piece of glass with no opening, as we rarely open the window and it’s beside the back door so we usually use that if we want some fresh air.

What I love most: The windows were planned very carefully around the views, so I’d suggest considering this early on at the design stage – even if it’s just about framing a nice plant or tree you like.

Also, it is great to have varying sizes of windows around the house. In the other rooms, we have very small windows that give you quick glimpses of the landscape, which makes it even more impactful when you move to the living room or kitchen and get these large-scale windows and views.
