Kitchen makeover for resale purposes

A small country style kitchen was about 15 years old and the owner wished to sell the property, a small cosy terraced home. As the kitchen is a key selling point for many property buyers, the challenge here was to make the kitchen fresh, clean and inviting without spending a fortune!

Firstly the area was decluttered, to make the space feel more open. The owner put rarely used items into storage and sold or donated many others, retaining just the necessary pieces. Minor repairs to door handles, hinges etc. were carried out. The pine ceiling and skirtings were painted white. As there were two differing door styles we decided to remove the doors from the island unit. We then added wicker baskets along a shelf here and also in any odd shaped alcoves around the kitchen. A fresh and pretty cotton fabric ruffle completed the country style look and a simple window blind from the same fabric tied the scheme together.

The existing tiles were painted with white tile paint and a backsplash was created from a job lot of black rectangular tiles. Finishing touches of fresh flowers and some plants ensured the house was a buyer’s delight and it sold almost immediately!

Total cost including materials & labour: €300
Highlights: cost of wicker baskets €15 each and tiles €25 total (job lot!)
