Kitchen makeover checklist: Where to start

  • Ensure the kitchen layout works for you – is there sufficient storage? Enough worktop space? Electrical outlets for each appliance? A utility space? The practical considerations must come first in this room as it is such a functional space.
  • Consider your budget – decide how much needs to be spent on the more costly items such as flooring, tiling etc. before you begin.
  • Declutter! Yes, even in the kitchen it makes a big difference…
  • Use colour wisely: bright colour accents often work best, adding fresh notes also helps provide interest.
  • Invest in key design elements, be it a piece of furniture or door handles!
  • Look at the options for professional help but be aware that some may be linked to suppliers.

A facelift for an existing Shaker style kitchen

An oak Shaker style kitchen was in very good condition and the layout worked really well for the homeowner, so to completely replace the kitchen seemed an unnecessary expense.

It was decided to repaint the units instead, whilst keeping the majority of the budget for retiling the floor in 60 x 60cm porcelain tiles and the purchase of some upholstered dining chairs.

The worktops, appliances and wall tiles remained in situ and all the cabinet doors were removed and repainted. The kickboards, trims and gables were painted onsite.

As the kitchen table suited the space it was repainted in the same colour as the units. Replacing the handles with classic style reeded antique gold completed the transformation.

A calm and restful colour scheme of cornflower blue highlights the ivory painted units making the entire kitchen space feel much lighter and more spacious.

Total cost including materials & labour: €4,000
Highlights: cost of upholstered chairs €200 each, and cabinet handles €5 each
