When you’re planning a major renovation or extension, it’s worth deciding on your electrical setup as early as possible, before your electrician begins first fix.

Whether you’re adding a new kitchen extension, reconfiguring rooms or opening up spaces, your electrician will need to know what fixtures are going in and where, to allow for the right supports, casings and wiring routes before walls are closed up.

Your electrician is usually the one who helps out with figuring out what light points to put in and where to have the sockets. A furniture plan will go a long way towards knowing where you’ll need socket and light points, be it on the wall, ceiling or floor.

A handy feature if you plan on using multiple lamps is to have them run off one switch at the wall.

If you’re installing new ventilation ducting or upgrading to a smart home setup — say with security cameras, home entertainment or remote lighting controls — these also must be planned in tandem, as they often run alongside electrical wiring.

New solar panels that are added to your setup will require you to make an application to your network provider (ESB Networks in ROI, NIE in NI); many panel suppliers will do this for you as part of the install. Grants are available for both solar thermal and PV panels in ROI.

Here’s more about electrics for your renovation or extension project.
