First of all I’d say that it is virtually impossible to compare standard running costs of heat pumps due to the variance that exists in how well the home is insulated and the lifestyle choices of the occupants e.g. wishing the house warm all the time vs someone who only wants heat in the morning and evening.

It is generally true that GSHP are more efficient during winter months when heat is needed the most but as you have rightly pointed out, the cost of installation is higher. ASHP are becoming ever more efficient and really the only way to make the right choice is to get professional advice from someone who can calculate the correct heat requirements and who can then forecast with reasonable accuracy both the installation and likely running costs of the two types.
