The concrete or screed that your underfloor heating pipes are embedded in, will act as a heat store (part of your homes thermal mass) and will emit the heat in a steady and even manner. You clearly need enough depth of screed to properly cover all your pipes and services running over the floor – not just those for the UFH. A shallower screed will have a faster response time (heat up quicker and cool quicker) than a thicker depth. In terms of deciding the right depth, you are probably best to provide your UFH supplier with the technical specs of the screed you plan to use and ask them what depth would be sufficient – they should have extensive experience of working with different types and depths of screed.
